How is fuel cost per mile calculated?
Total fuel spend divided by miles driven. If a tank cost you $42 and covered 310 miles, that is $42 divided by 310, or about 13.5 cents per mile. This calculator handles the unit conversion automatically, so a price entered per litre still produces a correct cost per mile.
How do I work out my total fuel expense for a trip?
Establish your fuel consumption from a recent fill-up, enter the current fuel price, then add the trip distance in the optional field. The calculator multiplies your measured consumption by the trip distance and by the price to give a total cost estimate.
Does fuel cost per mile include anything besides fuel?
No — it is fuel only. Total running cost also includes depreciation, insurance, tyres and servicing, which on a newer vehicle often outweigh fuel. This tool is deliberately scoped to fuel so the figure is unambiguous and easy to check against a receipt.
How do I split a fuel bill between passengers?
Take the total trip cost from this calculator and divide it by the number of people sharing the journey. Because the input is your measured consumption rather than an assumed average, the split tends to feel fair to everyone in the car.
Why did my actual cost come in higher than the estimate?
The estimate assumes similar driving conditions to the tank you measured. More motorway running, a fuller car, a roof box, or a fuel price higher than the one entered will all push the real cost above the projection — enter the highest price you expect to pay if you want a safer estimate.
Can I use this for a company mileage claim?
