"Mileage" in India means kilometres per litre, not miles per gallon, and it is probably the single most discussed number in any conversation about a vehicle. This calculator uses km/L as the default output, with litres for volume, kilometres for distance and rupees for cost — the combination you actually see on a petrol pump display.
Fuel prices vary noticeably between states because of differing state VAT, so a Mumbai rate and a Delhi rate can be several rupees apart for the same day. Rather than guessing, enter the rate from your own bill and the cost per kilometre will be accurate for where you fill up.
The same calculator works for a scooter, a motorcycle, a hatchback or an SUV — the arithmetic does not care what the vehicle is, only what distance it covered and how much fuel that took. Add a planned trip distance and it will also estimate the fuel and the cost for a journey you have not made yet.

Petrol and diesel are both sold by the litre, with prices revised daily by oil marketing companies. CNG is available across much of the north and west and is sold by the kilogram. Ethanol-blended petrol is now standard at most outlets, which slightly reduces energy content per litre and can shave a little off your measured mileage.
A small petrol hatchback commonly returns the high teens in km/L, a diesel sedan rather more, and a 110cc commuter motorcycle very much more. City-versus-highway variation is large — an honest highway figure can be forty percent above the same vehicle's city figure.

What is the correct way to check mileage?
Use the tank-to-tank method. Fill to the automatic cut-off, note the odometer or reset the trip meter, drive until the tank is around a quarter full, then fill to cut-off again at the same pump. Kilometres divided by litres added gives your true mileage. Checking at the same pump matters because cut-off points differ slightly between machines.
Why does my mileage drop in city driving?
Distance is only covered when the vehicle moves, but fuel is burned whenever the engine runs. Idling at a signal consumes fuel at zero kilometres per hour, which drags the average down hard. Frequent acceleration from standstill is also far more fuel-intensive than holding a steady highway speed.
Does petrol price differ by state?
Yes. Central excise is uniform but state VAT is not, so the pump price for the same fuel on the same day can differ by several rupees between states and sometimes between cities. Always enter your local rate rather than a national figure when working out cost per kilometre.
Is diesel actually cheaper to run?
Per kilometre, often yes — diesel engines typically deliver better fuel economy, and the calculator will show that directly once you enter your own figures. Whether it is cheaper overall depends on purchase price, annual distance and servicing costs, which this calculator does not attempt to model.
How do I calculate the cost of a road trip?
Enter a recent distance and fuel fill to establish your mileage, put in the current fuel price, then add your planned trip distance in the optional field. You will get an estimate of both the litres required and the total fuel cost for that journey.
Does ethanol blending affect mileage?
Slightly. Ethanol carries less energy per litre than petrol, so a blended fuel gives marginally fewer kilometres per litre. The effect is small — typically low single-digit percent — and easily hidden by traffic and driving-style variation.
